Taper roller bearings contain four main components: the inner rings, the outer ring (cup), the tapered rolling elements, and the roller retainer (cage). These bearings are specially engineered with tapered angles to accommodate both radial loads and thrust in housings and on rotating shaft assemblies.
Single row taper roller bearings are the most common. They feature the tapered cone assembly, fitted inside the cup. In most applications, the roller assembly is fitted with an opposing pair to support equal amounts of axial force in both directions. During assembly and fitting, the bearings can be placed to permit the required amount of clearance or preload conditions.

Double row tapered rollers comprise the same assembly as single row variants but contain two cups and cones. This variant of tapered roller bearing is more versatile in many applications, lending itself to a wide range of vehicular and industrial uses. Real-world applications include construction and mining machines, agriculture, gear box and axle systems, and engine motors.

The use of modern oils and lubricants in conjunction with tapered roller assemblies provides an extremely reliable and long-lasting construction, implemented almost ubiquitously in situations involving transmission shafts and rotating axles. Bearings in these shafts engineered to high enough standards can facilitate hundreds of thousands of miles of operation without any servicing or maintenance.
